I am honored to have the most talented and amazing Kirsten from Raven + Lily stop by today to share her passion and heart behind freedom for women globally.

What was the tipping point to you get involved in advocating against human trafficking?

IN 1998 I WAS LIVING IN BERKELEY, CA, WHEN THE NEWS CAME OUT ABOUT A LOCAL TRAFFICKING RING THAT INVOLVED ONE OF OUR FAVORITE INDIAN RESTAURANTS.  THIS LEAD TO US RESEARCHING MORE ABOUT MODERN DAY SLAVERY AS WELL AS CONNECTING WITH GROUPS LIKE INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE MISSION.  THE FOUNDER, GARY HAUGEN, HAPPEN TO ALSO COME TO BERKELEY THAT YEAR AND SHARED ABOUT HIS VISION TO STOP FORCED SLAVERY IN COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA AND CAMBODIA.  I WAS DEEPLY TOUCHED AND HOOKED FOR LIFE IN REGARDS TO BEING A PART OF SEEING SUCH INJUSTICE COME TO AN END.  ITS HARD TO BELIEVE MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE NOW BEEN INVOLVED FOR ALMOST 14 YEARS NOW AS ADVOCATES TO HELP END THE MODERN SLAVE TRADE.

What is a story that has gripped your heart the most from those you work alongside?

EVERY STORY I ENCOUNTER HONESTLY GRIPS MY HEART.  IT DOESN’T GET OLD.  IT HURTS TO HEAR THE PAIN AND FATHOM THE SUFFERING ESPECIALLY OF YOUNG GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD.  RECENTLY, ONE OF THE WOMEN IN OUR NEWEST CAMBODIA PARTNERSHIP WITH RAVEN + LILY OPENED UP AND SHARED HER STORY WITH ME.  THIS WAS ONLY THE SECOND TIME SHE HAD SHARED HER STORY, SO I FELT VERY HONORED THAT SHE TRUSTED ME.  I CRIED WITH HER AS SHE RELAYED THE 10 YEARS OF RAPE ENDURED BY THE MAN SHE WAS SOLD TO BY HER MOTHER AT AGE 9.  SHE’S NOW HIV POSITIVE AND ON THE ROAD TO PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALING.  I HONESTLY DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW SHE CAN SMILE, BUT SHE HAS A BEAUTIFUL ONE.  I’M PRAYING FOR HER IN HER JOURNEY TO FREEDOM AND HEALING.  I THINK IT WILL BE A LONG ROAD, BUT I’M HOPEFUL SHE CAN BEGIN TO BELIEVE SHE IS LOVED AND VALUED.

What is your favorite product coming out this fall?

MY FAVORITE PRODUCTS (CAN’T CHOOSE JUST ONE!) FROM OUR FALL 2012 COLLECTION IS THE KNIT NIMOL MAKE-UP BAG (HANDLOOMED FABRIC) FROM CAMBODIA, THE NEARY GOLD SHOULDER TEE (NATURAL DYED REMNANT JERSEY), TIFFANY KUNZ TUBE NECKLACE FROM ETHIOPIA (MADE FROM RECYCLED BULLET CASINGS) AND THE GREY SHIMMER SKETCHBOOK FROM INDIA (MADE FROM RECYCLED COTTON REMNANTS.)

What is one (or two) ways that you would recommend for others to be involved in ending human trafficking from here in the US?

THE TWO BEST WAYS:
1.  USE YOUR POWER AS A CONSUMER TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE.
 A) MAKE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO PURCHASE ITEMS THAT ARE SLAVE FREE OR PURCHASE ITEMS THAT SUPPORT FORMER VICTIMS OF SLAVERY.
B) USE APPS LIKE “FREE WORLD” TO ENCOURAGE BRANDS TO LOOK INTO THEIR SUPPLY CHAINS AS WELL AS  “BETTER WORLD SHOPPER” TO HELP YOU MAKE WISE DECISIONS ABOUT WHERE YOU SHOP AND SPEND YOUR MONEY.
2.  BECOME A PRAYER PARTNER FOR AN ORGANIZATION THAT IS FIGHTING FOR THE FREEDOM OF VICTIMS (IJM HAS A WEEKLY PRAYER UPDATE AND KEEPS YOU CONNECTED TO THE HEART OF ALL THEY ARE DOING ON THE GROUND AND REMINDS YOU TO NEVER FORGET THOSE WHO ARE STILL IN SLAVERY AROUND THE WORLD.)
